Hello shed fans.
After much consideration, we have decided to implement changes to skylights in all custom shed designs.
These changes took affect on Dec 15th in our shed design and order management software.
Fall protection mesh is now required under every skylight. Although this is not a building code requirement, it is now a HiTen requirement, and as such, fall protection mesh will be specified on our engineering drawings. When you think about it, skylights are not only dangerous to install, but they also make the shed very hot inside. We hope this new standard will help reduce fall risk for our installers and for shed owners and their children.
Skylights are still available in the system in various types and lengths, however from now on, when you select a skylight, fall protection mesh will be added for that condition. You do not need to do anything else. The system will allocate the mesh to the bill of materials for you. That being said, I hope you reconsider offering skylights to your customers in the future. LED lighting is very cheap these days and will offset the extra cost of skylights and labour for many, many years.
We have now implemented wall lights as an alternative to roof skylights. Wall lights can be added to any shed design and they are easier to install and a much safer option for everyone. To add skylights, simply select the skylights icon, select wall lights, and specify the location and size of the wall lights. In the below design, I have dropped LeanTo B by 600mm and filled it with wall lights. It’s easy and accurate.
Make the “Wall lights vs Skylights” benefits a selling feature when talking with your customers. Remember we make the process simple!
